Barrie planning staff is proposing to allow four-story apartment buildings on any residential street in the city. This will cut you out of the planning process. No other City in Ontario is doing what is proposed by planning staff in Barrie. There are many good places for low rise apartments in Barrie. And there many examples of where they fit in well. We need this form of housing. However, allowing them anywhere without public input is wrong. This means the decisions about growth and change on your street will be made by developers rather than your elected Council. City of Barrie planning staff are proposing to put 12 to 25 story apartment buildings beside single detached homes all across the City and cut the public out of the planning process. I have been a planner for 50 years and have written zoning by-laws for municipalities across Canada. No other municipality in Ontario is doing what is proposed by planning staff in Barrie, for a good reason. It cuts you as residents entirely out of the decisions about what happens on your street. There are very appropriate places for high density development in Barrie, but beside single-family homes is not one of them.
