There are actually families and children starving right now. One of our recipients is a 50-something-year-old single mom raising her 20-year-old autistic son, working like a dog all the time. All she can afford to eat is one sandwich a day. The horrible truth is, this is pretty normal for a lot of people working low-wage jobs - especially here in Barrie where it’s mostly low-wage jobs and is ranked the third-most expensive housing market in Canada. Another recipient can’t even afford to buy a box of birthday cake mix so she can bake her young son a cake for his birthday. There are thousands of families here in Barrie struggling to survive right now and the food bank is only giving them enough food to last a week - maybe - and that’s not including toilet paper either. Although we did these meal boxes for Christmas and Easter, June was Fresh Food Weekly’s first “monthly” meal box!
