This was my first #Thanksgiving ever. I am new to Canada, living in Barrie. So far, this place has been very welcoming, but there was one aspect of the city that I struggled with—the hostility and negative encounters I often had with some people in the plazas at night.
However, my perspective changed today when I had the chance to meet some of those same people face-to-face. They turned out to be sweet, friendly, and gentle. Some of them have clearly been through tough times, likely due to challenges rooted in their past, but others were genuinely kind and smart. Tonight, they were filled with gratitude after enjoying a delicious dinner.
All thanks to the Busby Centre, Sammi Wagg, and an amazing team of volunteers for making this possible. 160 people went to bed with full, happy stomachs tonight. I promise to be more compassionate and open as I continue to learn about Canada and the people here, and all I ask is for that same compassion in return—for myself and for those like me.
Happy thanksgiving to you all. #khalsa
